Melvin Geovany Pacheco, MD, and Ana Elizabeth Juarez, MD, husband and wife, started serving as medical doctors in a rented office in Las Mangas in early 2016. Our plan was to learn about the needs of the population in order to make a plan to stay long term. We started by giving medical advice and prescribing medicines to patients. We soon discovered that not many could afford to buy medicines. We began to seek out ways to receive outside help to provide solutions for some common problems that we encounter. There are many needs in different areas as well, for us so far our focus is to provide medical and spiritual healing to people. The spiritual is done when we talk to the patient and sometimes the patients does not need any medicines they need to be listen to or to be prayed for and we take time to do that. The clinic has help in many immediate emergencies for our local people and also for farmers that have walked 2 hours to get to us. It is a good feeling to be able to say that “we saved a life today” otherwise they would not have time or sources to get to the city. We have repaired wounds from rocks and machetes, gunshot wounds, and a simple toothaches to delivering a baby. Because of our ability to speak English we are able to attend to the tourists that come to our area. Of course there are things we need that will make our job more efficient and our load easy to handle, and that is your support.
Ana Elizabeth Juárez Urbina, MD, married to Melvin Pacheco, MD, studied at Universidad Nacional Autónoma of Honduras, Christian, bilingual, born in Río Viejo village, Cuenca del Cangrejal. daughter of farmer parents. I am the second of five sisters in my family, and the only one with an university degree. I did my elementary studies in my home town without hope to continue farther studies, because of the lack of opportunities with no high school in the area. My life changed in 2001 when Instituto El Rey, a non- profit organization opened its doors to poor children to further education. Instituto el Rey, led by American missionaries offered opportunities that I did not want to miss. I learned Christian principles, English, computers and leadership. I finished high school as one of the best students bringing honor to God and my family. From missionaries I received half scholarship to study medicine; my mother paid the rest. I love to defend the idea that we all are equal and I have always had so much compassion for women that suffer the indifference of society. I am now ready to use the many skills God has put in my hands, as well as, my work force to improve the life style of our people in our country. “Because greater is he who serves than he who does not serve.”
Both of us are product of missionaries and people that have given a hand to make a change in Honduras and to expand God’s kingdom. We learn good principles from our mentors, Earl & Sharon Washburn, missionaries that came to give their time and their knowledge to us by educational training, since the year 2001. As well as,Terry & Carrie Kessler that have come yearly to Honduras since 2002 and have work in different projects, including buildings for schools, hospitals, houses and teachings classes in between. Most of our manual skills we learned it from these four. Their work has made a great impact for families of this region. Others that have helped shape our lives are Mike & Peggy Yost missionaries in Honduras over 18 years, Iain & Liz Mckenzie, Robert Munjal, Allan & Mary Mishler, Jerry Blome, Mike Seger, Nathan Washburn, Chris & Sharon Struna, Jay & Susan Substad. These people have either taught us or supported us in high school and university. We can say thank you for getting us this far. We are on this mission now and we feel your encouragement and you are also welcome to become part of our projects.
